The annual FinEd Academic Writing Workshop for doctoral researchers will be held this year in Jyväskylä at hotel Alba (www.hotellialba.fi/en/frontpage), between November 30th and December 2nd (the program will start with a joint evening gathering at 18.00 on November 30th and end at 16.00 on December 2nd.)
Application period for the workshop is now open and will end on September 7th. We invite applications from doctoral researchers who are writing either article-based or monograph dissertation on educational-sciences at one of the FinEd member universities(University of Jyväskylä, University of Helsinki, University of Turku, Tampere University, University of Eastern Finland, University of Lapland, University of Oulu, and Åbo Akademi University).
The workshop focuses on the processes of academic and scientific writing. Activities will include individual and group work, mentor and peer feedback on participants’ texts, and keynote speeches. Furthermore, the workshop offers early career researchers an opportunity for networking, peer support, and making new friends. FinEd will pay the expenses of the participants (accommodation and meals; remuneration of travel within Finland).
We welcome applicants at all stages of the PhD process, but for working in the workshop, you need to have a textual part of your dissertation (e.g., a section of an article, or chapter of your monograph/dissertation compilation) to work on at the workshop. The text may be in written in English or Finnish. Accepted participants will be asked to submit the text before the workshop (by November 16th) and the text will be shared to one’s peer group members and mentor. The participants are also expected to read the texts of one’s peer group (3-5 texts) before the workshop.
Based on the applications, max. 30 participants will be chosen to participate by a selection committee comprising five FinEd steering group members, with a view to facilitating diversity (i.e., aiming for equal representation of FinEd member universities and researchers at different stages of the PhD process), and a special focus on the need of support and motivation for participation and working actively in a peer group. If there are more applications than may be accepted, prioritized in the selection are those who have not participated in the FinEd workshop before or who do not have opportunities to participate in similar events via another network. The selection committee will make the decisions by the end of September, and successful applicants will be informed about the choice by mid-October.

Answering the application form will take appr. 30 minutes, since you are required to describe in your own words, e.g., the situation of your dissertation work and the support you have and need for your writing, as well as to justify your motivation to participate in the workshop. You may choose to answer the form in English or in Finnish.
We will inform about the results of the call on October the 12th at the latest. Successful applicants will be sent detailed information on all the practicalities after being accepted.
