The FinEd Network will be coordinated by the University of Lapland 2020−2021

The FinEd Network is an organisation made up of eight academic member units. The coordination of the Network’s activities rotates within its member units. In the years 2020−2021, the Network will be coordinated by Faculty of Education, University of Lapland, Rovaniemi. The Network will be led by Professor Heli Ruokamo and coordinated by University Lecturer Marjaana Kangas. Professor Kirsi Karila, who led the network in 2018-2019, and Coordinator Anneli Lehtisalo thank everyone for good cooperation!

Do you already know the new Jufo portal?

The Publication Forum portal is a service for those interested in academic publishing. The portal can be used to search for information about scholarly publication series, conferences and book publishers and to suggest a classification level for publication channels. You can use the portal without logging in, but if you want more information about publishing channels or make suggestions on channels, you should log in with your own HAKA or ORCID account. The address of the portal is: http://jfp.csc.fi:8080/.

Do you want to acquaint yourself with the newest doctoral dissertations in the field of educational sciences?

Starting from the year 2010, the FinEd network’s website http://www.fined.fi/en/dissertations/ lists all doctoral dissertations in Finland in the field of educational sciences. There are direct links to the doctoral dissertations in 2019, so you can familiarize yourself with the newest works.

The Coordination of the FinEd Network Will Be Transferred to the University of Lapland

The FinEd Network is an organization made up of eight academic member units. The coordination of the Network’s activities rotates within its member units. In the years 2020−2021, the Network will be coordinated by Faculty of Education, University of Lapland, Rovaniemi. Previously, the Network have been coordinated by the Faculty of Education of the University of Turku (2015−2017) and the Faculty of Education and Culture of the Tampere University (2018−2019).

A Survey on Dissertation Financing: Doctoral Studies are found useful even outside of an academic career

According to an survey commissioned by the Finnish Cultural Foundation, people consider their doctoral studies to have been useful even if they never completed their thesis or if they did not go on to post-doctoral research. Read more about the survey.

The grant application period of the Finnish Cultural Foundation has now been opened. The deadline for proposals is the 31st of October. Read more.

The Annual Seminar of the FinEd Network 20 November 2019, University of Eastern Finalnd: Mixed Methods – Always Better?

The annual seminar of the FinEd Network will be organized as a pre-seminar to the FERA 2019 Conference, on Wednesday 20 November in the University of Eastern Finland, Joensuu campus. The topic of the pre-seminar is Mixed methods – always better? The keynote speaker will be Dr Lucila Carvalho (Massey University, New Zealand).

The pre-seminar is directed to doctoral researchers of the member units of the FinEd Network. The travel and accommodation (one night in a double room) costs of the seminar are covered by the FinEd to all doctoral researchers of the FinEd member units. The registration for the pre-seminar is made via an electronic form on the FinEd web page, the registration opens on the 26th of August 2019. The maximum number of participants will be 50 doctoral researchers.

The Academic Community in Finland is Fostering Open Science

Finnish research organizations and authorities have been actively engaged in fostering open science. In practice, this means open access publishing and opening up research data. National strategy and implementation plan for open access to scholarly publications is currently under preparation. The process of open science is coordinated in Finland by The Federation of Finnish Learned Socities with the funding of the Ministry of Education and Culture.

FinEd Article Workshop in the Spring of 2019: Writing by the Lake 9-10 May 2019, Tampere

Are you in the middle of writing a scientific article or just starting to write an article? Would you like to get more support for your writing process or comments on your text? Would you like to know more about an international publishing process of a scientific article?

You still have time to apply for a two-day article workshop organized by FinEd Network! In the article workshop, doctoral researchers prepare their scientific articles and receive comments and guidance from the senior researchers of the FinEd Network. During the workshop, there will be lectures on a scientific writing process and international publishing process. The application period expires on 28 February 2019. FinEd Annual Seminar 20 November 2019, Joensuu

The annual seminar of the FinEd Network will be held as a pre-seminar for the FERA Conference on Education. This year, the conference will be organized at the University of Eastern Finland, Joensuu Campus on 21-22 November 2019.

FinEd seminar Mixed methods – always better? will be held on Wednesday, 20 November 2019. The keynote speaker is Lucila Carvalho (Massey University, New Zealand). Seminar workshops will deal with research methods, especially mixed methods. A more detailed programme for the FinEd seminar will be published in early summer.

Science Europe has Published the Guide on Research Material Management

Science Europe, an association of the European research funding and research organizations, has published a guide to the international alignment of research data management at the end of the year 2018. The List of Doctoral Dissertations in the Field of Education Sciences on the FinEd’s Web Page

The FinEd Network will start publishing on its web page a list of doctoral dissertations in the field of educational sciences in Finland. The aim is to facilitate access to information on dissertations by gathering basic information on one page. The list includes information retroactively from 2010 onwards. Doctoral Researchers, you are welcome to the annual seminar of the FinEd Network! Identiety and Future of Educational Research, 14 Nov 2018, Tampere

The registration for the Annual Seminar of FinEd Network has now opened. The FinEd Network invites doctoral researchers to participate in its annual seminar in Tampere, 14 November, 2018. The seminar is entitled Identity and Future of Educational Research and the keynote speakers are Professor Harry Daniels (University of Oxford) and Professor Dorthe Staunæs (Aarhus University). The seminar will start with a session that addresses the questions of identity of the field. In the afternoon, the future of educational research will be discussed on a more concrete level in a session where feelings aroused by academic work will be considered. During the seminar the participants will also have an opportunity to present their ongoing work in parallel article workshops and receive feedback from the peers and senior researchers of the FinEd Mentor Pool. In addition, the seminar offers the participants an excellent opportunity for networking.

Submit your registration via an electronic form by 17 September 2018 at the latest.

The maximum number of participants will be 70 doctoral researchers. Do you already know the Aurora Database

The Aurora database gives information about Finnish research funders and their funding opportunities. Aurora is open to everyone and free of charge.

The registered users can save their searches and order email notifications of open calls. The database operates in three language versions, Finnish, Swedish and English. The database was renewed last spring so it functions better now via mobile devices. The Aurora database is produced by the University of Turku.

Web Page on Responsible Research Has Been Launched

The Responsible Research website is a guide to best practices in research integrity and science communication. The guide is based on articles written by experts. The articles discuss, for example, such themes as research permits, academic publishing and reuse of research materials.

The site has been built as a joint venture by the Committee for Public Information (TJNK) and the Finnish National Board on Research Integrity (TENK). Link to the site: https://www.vastuullinentiede.fi/en.

The Finnish Union of University Researchers and Teachers Has Published the Results of a Survey on Doctoral Candidates and Junior Researchers

The Finnish Union of University Researchers and Teachers makes surveys among its members regularly. In the spring of 2018, a survey on doctoral and junior researchers was published. The survey, written by Antero Puhakka, gives general information about the doctoral candidates and junior researchers working in Finnish universities as well as their working conditions. FERA Conference 15-16 November 2018, University of Tampere: Call for Abstracts

You are welcome to present your research at FERA conference in Tampere! In thematic groups participants present and discuss ongoing or finished research on the basis of academic presentations. Each session lasts 90 minutes, and typically one session includes three to four presentations. Abstracts submitted to the thematic groups will be reviewed by thematic group leaders. The group leaders prepare the programme of the sessions together with the conference organisers.

In some thematic groups the language will be English, and some groups are multilingual.

When you are preparing your abstract, please remember:

  • Give your presentation a title.
  • Describe your research briefly: central argument, theoretical background, methods and results if possible. You can use references but you don’t need to add a list of references in the abstract.
  • Write your abstract in the language of your presentation.
  • The maximum length of the abstract is 250 words.
  • Choose your thematic group. You will find the descriptions of the thematic groups here.

Submit your abstract via a form by 24 September. The acceptance of an abstract will be announced by 8 October at the latest.

You can also present your research with a poster. In an academic poster, you briefly illustrate the central points of your research: theoretical background, research questions, data, methods, results and conclusions. The size of a poster is A1 (width 594 mm x height 841 mm) or A0 (width 841 mm x height 1189 mm). Prepare an abstract of your poster (max 250 words), and submit it via a form by 24 September, 2018.

The poster exhibition will be open during the conference at the conference venue. Presenters will mount the posters themselves and remove them after the conference. Presenters are expected to be ready to present their posters during a coffee break dedicated for poster presentations. It is also possible to present the poster in web.
